The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: A Masterclass in Refined Motoring and a Clear Winner for MotorTrend Car of the Year

In the fiercely competitive arena of luxury automobiles, where innovation often takes center stage and bold statements are the norm, it’s easy for true substance to be overshadowed. Yet, standing apart, not through sheer flamboyance but through an unwavering commitment to iterative excellence, is the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This perennial contender, a benchmark for midsize luxury sedans and wagons, has once again ascended to the pinnacle, earning the coveted MotorTrend Car of the Year title for 2025. After a decade immersed in the automotive industry, observing trends and dissecting the nuances of vehicle design and engineering, I can confidently attest that this recognition is not merely deserved, but a testament to what happens when decades of refinement meet forward-thinking innovation.

The allure of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2025 isn’t derived from a radical departure or a flashy, attention-grabbing debut. Instead, its strength lies in its quiet, confident evolution. It’s the automotive equivalent of a seasoned artisan, constantly honing their craft. For 2025, the E-Class represents the culmination of decades of experience, meticulously sculpted to enhance every facet of the driving and ownership experience. This is a vehicle that understands its purpose: to be better. Smoother, more responsive, more efficient, and profoundly more comfortable, all while exuding a quiet, sophisticated luxury that doesn’t shout for attention but commands it through its sheer competence.

As an industry professional, I’ve seen countless vehicles aim for the stars, often burning brightly but briefly. The E-Class, however, is a consistent constellation. It’s a vehicle that reliably meets and exceeds expectations, a dependable constant in a world of automotive flux. This enduring quality, coupled with its significant advancements for the 2025 model year, makes it, in my considered opinion, arguably the finest midsize luxury car of the 21st century.

Design Evolution: More Than Just a Pretty Face

For years, the E-Class has occupied an interesting, albeit sometimes challenging, space within the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Often perceived as nestled between the larger, more opulent S-Class and the sportier, more compact C-Class, it sometimes struggled to forge its own distinct identity. Previous generations occasionally saw styling cues borrowed from its elder sibling and interior appointments that felt more aligned with its junior counterpart. However, the newly refreshed 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class breaks free from this paradigm. It finally feels unequivocally like an E-Class, a unique entity with its own compelling narrative.

The exterior styling for the 2025 model year is unmistakably Mercedes-Benz, yet it achieves a new level of sophisticated individuality. Gone is the feeling of simply being a variation on a theme. As automotive engineering luminary Chris Theodore observed, “The sedan’s side view is simple yet elegant without being flashy.” He further elaborated on subtle design elements, noting, “Subtle longitudinal strakes near the top of the front and rear fenders kindle a reminder of the classic Gullwing while visually lengthening the sedan’s appearance.” This attention to detail imbues the E-Class with a timeless grace, a subtle nod to its heritage without resorting to retro pastiche.

Even the station wagon variant, offered in the pseudo-crossover E450 All-Terrain guise, transcends its utilitarian roots. Despite sharing the same wheelbase and overall length as the sedan, its design employs a tapered daylight opening, creating a visual impression of a stretched, elegant shooting brake profile. It’s a masterful stroke that balances form and function, appealing to a broader spectrum of discerning buyers.

While the front and rear fascia treatments may not represent a seismic shift in the grand tapestry of automotive design, within the context of Mercedes-Benz’s evolving aesthetic, they signify a confident evolutionary leap. The deeply sculpted headlights, reminiscent of the brand’s late 20th-century designs, subtly echo the innovative spirit of past eras, while also indirectly acknowledging the design language that defined premium executive sedans in the early 2000s – a period where rivals like BMW arguably set new standards.

A conscious effort has been made to visually link the new gasoline-powered E-Class with Mercedes’ all-electric EQ models. The integration of a black surround for the grille, featuring the iconic three-pointed star, creates a unified visual language. While some might find this front-end treatment reminiscent of a nocturnal creature, the rear-end execution is undeniably successful. A sleek LED light bar seamlessly connects the scalloped, tri-star-adorned taillights, effectively bridging the visual gap between the most enduring Mercedes model and its more avant-garde electric counterparts. This design coherence underscores the brand’s commitment to a unified future.

The interior, too, has undergone a significant metamorphosis, moving beyond mere aesthetic updates to a more holistic approach to occupant experience. The expansive, 3D-capable digital instrument cluster, the central infotainment display, and the optional, passenger-facing “Superscreen” are undeniably captivating. However, beneath this technological prowess lies a remarkably cohesive and thoughtfully designed cabin. The attention paid to seemingly minor details, such as the air vents, is particularly noteworthy. They are not merely functional elements; they are artfully integrated, visually connecting the left and right sides of the cabin and harmonizing with the elegant, floating door pulls. These door pulls, in addition to their aesthetic appeal, contribute to increased storage capacity within the door pockets – a small but significant practical enhancement.

At night, the ambient LED lighting, combined with the passenger screen’s dynamic screensavers, creates an atmosphere of surprising beauty and tranquility. It’s an environment that invites you to linger, an effect amplified by the remarkable quietude of the cabin, even at elevated highway speeds. This level of refined serenity is a hallmark of true luxury, and the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class delivers it in spades.

From a practical standpoint, the new E-Class is demonstrably more user-centric. The center console now features discreet storage solutions, including a hidden wireless phone charging slot and retractable front cupholders, maximizing space for personal effects. Rear-seat occupants benefit from increased legroom, partly due to subtly sculpted front seatbacks. Furthermore, the cargo capacity in both the sedan and wagon variants has been notably enhanced, with the sedan now offering utility comparable to some compact SUVs, and the wagon rivaling the storage volume of certain midsize SUVs. This thoughtful integration of practicality into a luxury package is a key differentiator.

Engineering Prowess: A Renewed Focus on Core Strengths

The intentional strategy to imbue the E-Class with a stronger, more distinct identity extends beyond its aesthetics to its very engineering. The previous generation, while highly accomplished and a recipient of our 2021 Car of the Year award, attempted to be a jack-of-all-trades. Offering a sedan, wagon, lifted wagon, coupe, and convertible meant compromises were inevitable. Each body style demands different driving dynamics, and the vast array of powertrain options further complicated the pursuit of universal excellence. Consequently, some E-Class variants were inherently superior to others.

For the 2025 model year, Mercedes-Benz has strategically refined its approach. The coupe and convertible variants have been transitioned into the newly established CLE-Class, allowing the E-Class to refocus its considerable engineering resources on its core strengths: the sedan and wagon. This deliberate specialization has yielded significant dividends. The decision to classify the E450 All-Terrain as a wagon, rather than a crossover, further solidifies its position within the Car of the Year competition, and rightly so.

A foundational improvement is the nearly one-inch extension of the wheelbase for the new E-Class. This strategic lengthening enhances straight-line stability, contributes to a more comfortable ride, and expands interior volume – all critical attributes for a luxury sedan. Suspension enhancements, such as the integration of springs and dampers into a single assembly that is isolated from steering inputs, actively work to insulate the cabin from road imperfections and noise. The updated, single-chamber AirMatic air suspension further refines this isolation, providing a ride quality that is nothing short of sublime.

When paired with the optional four-wheel steering system (available on the sedan as part of the Technology package), the E-Class achieves a remarkable duality. The air springs dynamically adjust their stiffness in response to road conditions, further smoothing out impacts. The four-wheel steering, meanwhile, significantly reduces the turning radius to a more manageable 36.4 feet, enhancing agility in urban environments. While the E450 All-Terrain, due to trunk space constraints, does not feature four-wheel steering, it benefits from its own unique AirMatic tuning. This setup provides a higher default ride height and an engaging Off-Road mode, elevating the wagon to a respectable 7.0 inches of ground clearance, further expanding its capabilities.

At the heart of these advancements lie refined iterations of two familiar powertrains. The E350 sedan receives the most significant overhaul, now featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine augmented by a new permanent-magnet motor functioning as an integrated starter generator. This mild-hybrid system not only boosts efficiency but also dramatically smooths power delivery, creating an almost imperceptible transition between engine and electric power. The result is a robust 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, channeled through Mercedes-Benz’s ubiquitous nine-speed automatic transmission. The E350 is exclusively offered with rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option.

The E450 sedan and All-Terrain continue to be powered by Mercedes-Benz’s silky-smooth 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, also featuring the permanent-magnet mild-hybrid setup. Further optimized for efficiency, this powertrain delivers a potent 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. All E450 models come standard with all-wheel drive and the nine-speed automatic transmission. While specific figures for forthcoming AMG variants remain speculative, the existing engine lineup sets a high bar for performance and refinement.

A crucial element of the powertrain strategy across the entire 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup is the integration of electric motor assist. This enables the vehicles to glide with the engine disengaged, seamlessly filling in power delivery gaps and recapturing energy during braking. The stop-start system has also been refined to near imperceptibility, a testament to the sophisticated integration of hybrid technology.

The fuel efficiency of the new E-Class is remarkably impressive, especially considering its luxury positioning. The E350 achieves an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. Both E450 sedan and All-Terrain models offer 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. What’s even more noteworthy is that these figures are not the result of hyper-miling focused tuning. During sustained 80-mph highway cruising, both E450 variants consistently achieved around 30 mpg, with combined figures remaining remarkably close to their EPA ratings even after rigorous testing loops. This demonstrates a genuine commitment to real-world efficiency.

Software Sophistication: The Intelligent Evolution of MBUX

In an era where software is as critical as hardware, Mercedes-Benz has leveraged its expertise to elevate the E-Class experience. The latest iteration of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system is powered by a single, high-performance processor, a significant upgrade from the multi-processor architecture of its predecessor. This consolidation streamlines system operations and facilitates seamless over-the-air updates, ensuring the E-Class remains at the forefront of technological advancement.

The integration of third-party applications, such as Zoom (enabled by an optional cabin-facing camera), TikTok, YouTube, and the Vivaldi web browser, transforms the E-Class into a connected hub. The in-house developed artificial intelligence software within MBUX unlocks a suite of innovative features designed to simplify and enhance the owner’s life.

The AI’s capabilities extend beyond basic contextual recommendations, such as suggesting a seat massage after extended driving periods. The “Routines” app allows for personalized “if-this-then-that” settings. For example, owners can program the parking cameras to activate when approaching a specific high curb, or the heated seats to engage after a workout at the gym. The system can also automatically activate cooled seats when ambient temperatures exceed a certain threshold or lower a driver’s window when approaching a designated gate. Mercedes-Benz has pledged ongoing updates, with the AI poised to fully automate routine tasks and proactively anticipate driver needs by suggesting new routines based on individual usage patterns and vehicle data. This level of predictive assistance is truly groundbreaking.

The infotainment interface itself has undergone a significant redesign, adopting a smartphone-like intuitive layout. Color-coded apps and larger, more easily operable tiles enhance usability, particularly while driving. While the reduction in physical buttons to a small bank below the central display is a point of contention for some, the continued functionality of these physical controls is a welcome relief from the often-frustrating haptic touch interfaces found on Mercedes-Benz steering wheels. While MBUX represents a significant leap forward, there remains room for refinement. Some judges noted the potential for driver distraction, and the voice assistant, while functional, lacks the conversational fluidity of more advanced systems. However, these are minor points in an otherwise deeply impressive technological ecosystem.

Performance and Safety: A Symphony of Comfort and Control

Beyond the aforementioned minor critiques of interior controls and software interfaces, the overarching engineering achievements of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are undeniable. As industry veterans like Mike Floyd have noted, “Mercedes has been refining the E-Class for a long, long time, and it’s clear it has honed it to the point of being an executive sport sedan out of central casting.” This focused approach has allowed Mercedes-Benz to craft one of the most compelling midsize luxury sedans available, with every component working in concert to deliver refinement, precision, and class-leading performance.

The revamped turbocharged inline-six in the E450 is a true marvel. Despite its not-overly-impressive on-paper specifications, its power delivery is utterly effortless. The engine starts and idles with such astonishing smoothness that a quick glance at the tachometer is often necessary to confirm it’s running. Associate editor Billy Rehbock aptly commented, “We should have tried the Lexus Champagne glass test with the E-Class. It would have aced it.” Beyond idle, the E450’s power delivery is progressive and seamless. The electric motor’s support effectively eliminates turbo lag, and the nine-speed transmission ensures uninterrupted forward momentum.

While a four-cylinder E350 was not available for our Car of the Year evaluations, prior experience with this engine, particularly in its hybridized form, points to drastic improvements over its non-hybridized predecessor. Technical director Frank Markus, in a previous assessment, described the E350’s 2.0-liter turbo as “an old-world butler: quietly and efficiently.”

The ride and handling characteristics of the E-Class are equally exceptional. Deputy editor Alexander Stoklosa perfectly captured the essence of its tuning: “Credit to Mercedes in following its gut (and brand image) when tuning this car. It’s not sporty—distinctly not so—but offers great acceleration and competent handling, along with a suspension that keeps things just buttoned down enough to handle the power on hand, and not an ounce of starch more. There is lean, there is dive, there is squat, but there also is a payoff: The ride is serene, wheel motions are well-managed, and the car doesn’t fall apart when driven hard.” Two other judges succinctly summarized their sentiment: “It’s a damn near perfect luxury sedan.”

Both E-Class models exhibited crisp and precise steering, offering ample feedback from the road surface without undue effort. While the E450 All-Terrain handled admirably, the inclusion of the sedan’s four-wheel steering system made a discernible difference in its maneuverability. It felt notably more agile in urban confines and nimbler on winding back roads.

On a more adventurous note, the E450 All-Terrain proved capable of venturing beyond paved surfaces. Equipped with its dedicated Off-Road drive mode and protective cladding, we tested its mettle in the rugged terrain of the Mojave Desert. Despite potential limitations in breakover angle and underbody protection, the All-Terrain demonstrated impressive capability, navigating hard and soft sand with confidence. It even conquered a 30-degree concrete ramp, flawlessly distributing power to maintain traction. “Traction is great,” Stoklosa remarked. “After billy-goating into a ditch that we’d need to rub some paint to get out of, we threw the All-Terrain into reverse and backed up an uneven, potholed grade. There was barely any unwanted wheelspin and no rubbing.”

This remarkable ride quality is not exclusive to the wagon. The street-focused E450 sedan delivered an equally superb experience. A particularly impressive feature across both models is their ability to “learn” challenging road conditions. The navigation system flags these areas, providing audible warnings to the driver in advance, enhancing situational awareness and driver confidence.

And then there is the autonomous driving aspect. While the E-Class doesn’t feature Level 3 semi-autonomy (currently exclusive to the S-Class and EQS in Germany), its Driver Assistance package is remarkably sophisticated. Combining adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping functions, the system enables automatic lane changes (which can also be initiated by the driver via the turn signal). Crucially, the acceleration and braking are calibrated to mimic human driving patterns, fostering a sense of trust and predictability. This translates to a system that capably tracks lanes, maintains appropriate following distances, and reduces driver workload on long journeys, ensuring passengers arrive feeling more refreshed.

Underpinning these advanced systems is a comprehensive suite of active safety features expected in any modern premium vehicle, including automatic emergency braking, rear-end collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist. The latter is so unobtrusive that most judges found no need to disable it, even on demanding roads. Should these active safety measures prove insufficient, the E-Class boasts a 5-Star overall Euro NCAP safety rating.

Value Proposition and Concluding Thoughts

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are often perceived as expensive, a perception often reinforced by their specialized commercial applications. However, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers exceptional value within the competitive midsize luxury sedan segment, particularly when one considers the extensive list of standard equipment and the unparalleled driving experience it provides. Pricing for the E350 begins at $63,600, the E450 at $72,000, and the E450 All-Terrain at $77,250. While these figures position it above the Audi A6 and the new BMW 5 Series (which was unavailable for our Car of the Year evaluations beyond its electric i5 variant), the Mercedes-Benz demonstrably surpasses its rivals in cohesive quality and overall execution.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class may not have been the most visually ostentatious choice for MotorTrend Car of the Year, but like all truly exceptional luxury products, its intrinsic value transcends mere popularity. The new E-Class exudes a quiet confidence and an inherent capability that requires no external validation. It is neither gaudy nor showy; instead, it communicates its worth directly to its occupants through an unwavering commitment to excellence. Its performance across our six key evaluation criteria surpassed that of any other contender, making the decision to award it the Golden Calipers – its second such victory in a relatively short period – a clear and resounding one.

For those seeking an automotive experience that consistently prioritizes refinement, technological sophistication, and an enduring sense of luxury, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands as the undisputed leader.
