The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: A Masterclass in Refined Excellence and the Definitive Choice for America’s Drivers

For over seven decades, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has stood as a benchmark in the automotive world, a constant presence synonymous with innovation, luxury, and unwavering capability. It’s a vehicle that doesn’t shout its accomplishments but rather embodies them, an ethos perfectly captured by its recognition as the 2025 MotorTrend Car of the Year. This isn’t a vehicle that chasing fleeting trends or designed for a momentary splash; it’s the culmination of meticulous engineering and thoughtful design, a vehicle that consistently evolves to meet and exceed the expectations of discerning drivers across the United States. Having spent a decade immersed in the automotive industry, witnessing the rapid advancements and shifting priorities, I can attest that the 10th-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class represents a profound leap forward, setting a new standard for what a midsize luxury sedan and wagon should be in the 21st century.

Beyond the Sparkle: The Substance of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

In a landscape often dominated by the allure of hyper-performance electric machines or the nostalgia-driven revival of iconic models, the E-Class carves its own distinct path. Its 2025 iteration, however, is far from the predictable. It’s a testament to the power of continuous refinement, a philosophy deeply embedded in the Mercedes-Benz DNA since the 1950s. The objective is singular: to be demonstrably better. Smoother, more responsive, more efficient, profoundly comfortable, and presciently aware of driver needs. The luxury it offers isn’t ostentatious; it’s an understated confidence, a quiet assurance that permeates every interaction with the vehicle. This is the essence of a dependable constant, the vehicle that delivers precisely what you need, precisely when you need it. It’s for these reasons, and many more, that the coveted Golden Calipers of the 2025 MotorTrend Car of the Year award are bestowed upon the remarkable 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

A Design Language Evolved: More Than Just a Pretty Face

For generations, the E-Class has navigated a delicate balancing act, often existing in the considerable shadow cast by the flagship S-Class, while simultaneously feeling the pressure from the more compact C-Class. This historical positioning sometimes resulted in an E-Class that felt like a compromise, inheriting styling cues from its larger sibling while adopting interior treatments more akin to its smaller counterpart.

The newly introduced 2024 E-Class, available in both elegant sedan and versatile station wagon (including the pseudo-crossover E450 All-Terrain guise), finally breaks free from this duality. It possesses an unmistakable Mercedes-Benz identity, yet it’s no longer simply a resized rendition of another model. As guest judge and esteemed automotive engineering veteran Chris Theodore observed, “The sedan’s side profile is elegant and understated without being ostentatious. Subtle character lines gracing the upper portions of the front and rear fenders evoke a sense of classic Mercedes-Benz design, specifically reminiscent of the iconic Gullwing, while visually extending the sedan’s presence.” The wagon, sharing the same wheelbase and overall length as the sedan, achieves a sense of visual length through a tapered greenhouse, bestowing the All-Terrain model with a sophisticated shooting brake silhouette.

While the front and rear design treatments may not represent a radical departure in the broader automotive design spectrum, within the context of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, they signify a considered evolutionary step and offer a glimpse into Stuttgart’s future design direction. The signature scalloped headlights subtly pay homage to the marque’s late 20th-century aesthetic, indirectly referencing the era of Chris Bangle-designed BMWs, which arguably redefined the benchmark for modern executive sedans.

A conscious effort has been made to visually bridge the gap between the gasoline-powered E-Class and Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric EQ lineup. The front fascia, characterized by a black surround for the grille adorned with the signature three-pointed star, is a design choice that has drawn comparisons, some less flattering than others. However, the rear-end execution is undeniably more successful. A sleek LED lightbar elegantly connects the two scalloped, tri-star-emblazoned taillights, creating a cohesive visual link between the front and rear of Mercedes-Benz’s most enduring and successful model line and its increasingly prominent electric counterparts.

The interior architecture has also undergone a significant evolutionary enhancement. At first glance, the expansive, 3D-capable digital instrument cluster, the central infotainment display, and the optional, passenger-facing “Superscreen” might seem to dominate the attention. However, upon closer inspection, these elements are integrated into a remarkably cohesive and thoughtfully designed cabin. Particular attention has been paid to the air vents; they seamlessly blend their functional purpose with aesthetic appeal, creating a visual continuity across the cabin and linking to the elegantly integrated, floating door pulls. These door pulls not only enhance the visual appeal but also ingeniously create additional storage space within the door pockets. The ambient lighting, with its new color palette, working in concert with the screensaver options on the passenger display, conjures a surprisingly captivating ambiance after dark. It’s a genuinely inviting space to inhabit, especially when considering the near-silent operation of the cabin at highway velocities.

From a pragmatic standpoint, the new E-Class exhibits a more user-centric design, prioritizing the storage of personal belongings. The center console, for instance, features a discreet wireless charging pad and cleverly designed foldaway front cupholders, liberating space for an array of smaller items. The rear seating area offers enhanced spaciousness, partly due to sculpted front seatbacks that provide additional legroom. The cargo capacity of both the sedan and wagon versions has also been improved. The sedan now boasts cargo volume comparable to compact SUVs, while the wagon matches the capacity of some midsize SUVs, underscoring the practicality and versatility of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and wagon variants.

Engineering Prowess and Uncompromising Efficiency: The Heart of the E-Class

This deliberate move to establish the E-Class as a distinct entity yields significant dividends across the entire vehicle. The previous generation, while highly competent and deserving of its own accolades, attempted to cater to an overly broad spectrum of automotive desires. The proliferation of body styles—sedan, wagon, lifted wagon, coupe, and convertible—while offering choice, invariably led to compromises. A coupe, by its very nature, should possess a different driving dynamic than a lifted wagon, and a sedan’s characteristics will differ from a convertible’s. This diversity, coupled with an intricate array of powertrains, meant that certain E-Class configurations were inevitably superior to others.

For the 2024 model year, Mercedes-Benz has strategically decoupled the E-Class from its coupe and convertible duties. These models, along with their C-Class counterparts, have been spun off into the dedicated CLE-Class. This strategic separation allows the new E-Class to concentrate its engineering efforts on its core offerings: the highly popular sedan and wagon variants. It’s worth noting that the previous-generation E450 All-Terrain was evaluated in our SUV of the Year competition. However, Mercedes-Benz now correctly classifies this variant as a wagon, thus its inclusion in the prestigious Car of the Year proceedings is entirely appropriate.

The foundation of the new E-Class’s enhanced dynamics lies in its lengthened wheelbase, now nearly an inch longer than its predecessor. This adjustment significantly bolsters straight-line stability, ride comfort, and overall interior volume. Further contributing to the serene cabin experience are suspension revisions that integrate springs and dampers into a single unit, effectively isolating them from steering inputs. This meticulous approach minimizes the intrusion of noise and vibration, a welcome feature for occupants who value a tranquil journey. Enhancements to the single-chamber AirMatic air suspension system further elevate the ride quality.

Paired with optional four-wheel steering (available on the sedan as part of the Technology package), the air springs dynamically adjust their stiffness in real-time, responding to the road surface and further insulating the cabin from impacts. The four-wheel steering system commendably reduces the vehicle’s turning radius by three feet, bringing it down to a remarkably agile 36.4 feet. While the E450 All-Terrain does not offer four-wheel steering due to packaging constraints that would impinge on trunk space, it benefits from a uniquely calibrated AirMatic suspension. This system provides a higher default ride height than the sedan and features an Off-Road mode that elevates the Mercedes wagon’s ground clearance to a very capable 7.0 inches.

Underpinning these advancements are refinements to two familiar powertrain configurations. The base E350 sedan receives the most significant overhaul, integrating a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with a new permanent-magnet motor that functions as an integrated starter-generator. This hybrid synergy not only enhances efficiency but also dramatically smooths power delivery. This new mild-hybrid powertrain delivers a robust 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, channeled through Mercedes-Benz’s ubiquitous nine-speed automatic transmission. The E350 is the sole E-Class variant offered with rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade.

The E450 sedan and All-Terrain models continue to draw power from the automaker’s exceptionally smooth 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, also featuring a permanent-magnet mild-hybrid system. This powertrain, further optimized for efficiency, largely carries over from the previous generation in terms of performance, producing 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. All E450 variants are equipped with the nine-speed automatic transmission and come standard with all-wheel drive. We anticipate the engine lineup will expand with the introduction of AMG variants in the near future.

Thanks to the integration of electric motor assistance across the entire lineup, all new E-Class models are capable of silent, engine-off gliding. The electric motor seamlessly fills any power gaps from the internal combustion engine and recaptures energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. Furthermore, the stop-start system has been refined to a point of near imperceptibility, enhancing the overall driving experience. This focus on integrating electric power with traditional engines is a key trend in the luxury automotive market, driving both efficiency and performance.

The result of these engineering efforts is a more fuel-efficient E-Class. The E350 achieves an EPA-estimated rating of up to 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. Both the E450 sedan and the All-Terrain wagon deliver an impressive 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. What is particularly noteworthy is that these figures are not achieved through radical tuning solely for EPA testing. During sustained 80-mph cruising, both E450 variants consistently achieved around 30 mpg, with the combined figure remaining remarkably close to the official rating even after a full day of spirited driving. This focus on real-world fuel economy, particularly for high-performance luxury vehicles, is a critical consideration for consumers seeking to balance performance with environmental consciousness and reduce their 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class gas mileage concerns.

In line with contemporary automotive trends, Mercedes-Benz has extensively leveraged software engineering to complement its hardware advancements. At the core of these updates is the latest iteration of the MBUX infotainment system. This new system utilizes a single, powerful processor, a departure from the previous generation’s multiple, less potent units. This consolidation facilitates more efficient over-the-air updates for the infotainment system and enables the seamless integration of third-party applications, such as Zoom (supported by an optional cabin-facing camera), TikTok, YouTube, and the Vivaldi web browser, all of which are now readily accessible within the E-Class.

The system, empowered by in-house developed artificial intelligence, introduces several innovative features designed to simplify and enhance the owner’s experience. Currently, the AI can provide basic contextual recommendations, such as suggesting a seat massage function after a prolonged period of driving. The “Routines” app allows for driver-customized “if-then” scenarios. For example, owners can program the parking cameras to activate when approaching a specific high curb or schedule heated seats to turn on upon exiting the gym. The system can also automatically engage cooled seats if the external temperature exceeds a defined threshold or lower a driver’s window when approaching a specific gate. Mercedes-Benz has pledged future updates that will enable its AI to fully automate routine tasks without driver input and proactively anticipate driver needs by suggesting new routines based on the car’s usage patterns and the driver’s habits. This evolution towards AI-driven personalization is a significant development in luxury car technology and a key differentiator for the new Mercedes E-Class.

The infotainment interface itself has been redesigned to mirror the intuitive nature of a smartphone, simplifying operation. Applications are now color-coded by function, and their larger tiles are easier to interact with while driving. A minor detraction is the reduction in the number of physical buttons, with only a small bank located below the central infotainment display. Thankfully, these buttons retain a tactile and responsive feel, a welcome contrast to the haptic touch controls Mercedes-Benz continues to implement on its steering wheels. Our experiences with MBUX remain somewhat mixed. Several judges noted spending an excessive amount of time with their eyes off the road while interacting with the system, and the current iteration of Mercedes-Benz’s voice assistant lacks conversational fluency, presenting an area for potential improvement in future updates.

Performance of Intended Function: A Symphony of Refinement and Safety

Barring minor observations regarding certain interior controls and software interactions, the overarching success of the engineering efforts invested in the new E-Class is undeniable. As Mike Floyd, Director of Editorial Operations, eloquently stated, “Mercedes-Benz has been refining the E-Class for an extended period, and it’s evident that they have honed it to perfection, presenting an executive sport sedan that is the epitome of its class.” The focused development on the new E-Class has enabled Mercedes-Benz to engineer one of the most compelling midsize luxury sedans ever conceived, with every component meticulously calibrated to achieve a singular goal: refinement, precision, and class-leading performance.

The updated turbocharged and hybridized inline-six engine in the E450 deserves significant commendation. While its specifications may not appear overwhelming on paper, it’s an engine that operates with remarkable effortlessness and composure. It starts and idles so smoothly that one might occasionally need to glance at the tachometer to confirm it is running. Associate Editor Billy Rehbock humorously suggested, “We should have performed the Lexus Champagne glass test with the E-Class; it would have aced it.” Beyond its idle refinement, the E450’s engine delivers its power progressively. The electric motor’s seamless integration effectively eliminates turbo lag, and the nine-speed transmission ensures a constant, uninterrupted surge of forward momentum. This smooth power delivery is a hallmark of modern performance luxury vehicles.

Although Mercedes-Benz was unable to provide an E350 for our Car of the Year evaluations, prior experience with that model indicates substantial improvements over its non-hybridized predecessor. Technical Director Frank Markus, in a previous assessment of a 4Matic-equipped model, noted, “The E350’s compact 2.0-liter turbo engine performs its duties with the quiet efficiency of an old-world butler.” This sentiment underscores the refined character of the E-Class.

The ride and handling characteristics of the E-Class are equally sublime. Deputy Editor Alexander Stoklosa praised Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to its brand identity: “Credit to Mercedes for trusting its instincts and brand image when tuning this vehicle. It is not sporty—distinctly not so—but it offers excellent acceleration and composed handling, complemented by a suspension that maintains just enough control to manage the available power without any excess rigidity. There is body roll, there is dive, there is squat, but there is also a significant payoff: the ride is serene, wheel movements are expertly managed, and the car remains composed even when driven assertively.” Two other judges summarized their impressions succinctly, with both remarking that the E-Class is “a virtually perfect luxury sedan.”

Both E-Class models subjected to our evaluation exhibited precise steering, requiring minimal effort while providing ample feedback from the road surface. While we encountered no significant criticisms regarding the handling of the E450 All-Terrain, the sedan’s four-wheel steering system noticeably enhanced its maneuverability. It felt more agile in confined urban environments and more dynamic when navigating winding country roads, showcasing the benefits of advanced steering technology in luxury cars.

On the positive side for the wagon variant, the E450 All-Terrain proved capable of venturing beyond paved roads. Given its dedicated Off-Road drive mode and robust cladding, we subjected it to testing on rough terrain at Hyundai’s proving ground in the Mojave Desert. Despite inherent limitations such as a modest breakover angle and a relatively soft underbelly, the All-Terrain demonstrated an impressive ability to traverse terrain that would challenge many light-duty crossovers. It rode exceptionally well over both hard and soft sand, lifted a wheel while ascending a 30-degree concrete ramp, and effectively routed power to where it was needed. Stoklosa commented, “Traction is excellent. After maneuvering into a ditch that would have required some paint touch-up to extricate ourselves from, we engaged reverse on the All-Terrain and backed up an uneven, potholed incline. There was minimal unwanted wheelspin and no contact with the bodywork.” This capability expands the appeal of the 2025 Mercedes E-Class wagon for those seeking a blend of luxury and light off-road prowess.

An exceptional ride quality is not exclusive to the wagon; the road-focused E450 sedan delivered an equally superb experience. We particularly appreciated how both vehicles demonstrated the ability to “learn” harsher road surfaces encountered at the proving ground and on our test routes. They flagged these locations within the onboard navigation system and audibly alerted the driver in advance, a significant enhancement for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

And let us not forget the most remarkable aspect of the E-Class driving experience: the ability to sometimes relinquish control. While it does not feature Level 3 semi-autonomous driving capability through Mercedes-Benz’s new Drive Pilot system (currently exclusive to the S-Class and EQS in Germany), we were thoroughly impressed by the humanlike operation of its Driver Assistance package. This system, integrating adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping functions, allows the E-Class to execute automatic lane changes (which can also be initiated by the driver via the turn signal) and to accelerate and decelerate in a manner far more akin to an average human driver. For owners, this translates into a trustworthy system that adeptly tracks lanes, maintains appropriate following distances, and behaves more predictably, thereby reducing the workload on long highway journeys. The driver can focus on monitoring the road and lightly holding the steering wheel, arriving at their destination feeling more refreshed. This advanced ADAS technology is a crucial aspect of modern automotive safety and a significant draw for new car buyers.

Complementing these advanced systems are all the active safety measures one would expect in a contemporary vehicle, including automatic emergency braking, a system designed to protect occupants during rear-end collisions, and lane-keeping assist. The latter was so unobtrusive that most judges found no need to deactivate it, even on winding back roads. In the event of any failure of these active safety measures, the E-Class holds a 5-Star overall Euro NCAP safety rating. (Note: Neither NHTSA nor the IIHS has yet released crash test results for the new E-Class.)

Value Proposition and Final Verdict: The Pinnacle of Midsize Luxury

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are often perceived as premium-priced, and indeed, their positioning reflects that. However, the new E-Class offers compelling value within the midsize luxury sedan segment, particularly when considering its extensive list of standard equipment and the exceptional driving experience it provides. The “entry-level” E350 sedan begins at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $63,600. The E450 sedan starts at $72,000, and the E450 All-Terrain is priced at $77,250. While these figures are higher than those of the Audi A6 and the new BMW 5 Series (which was unavailable for our Car of the Year evaluations beyond its electric i5 variant), we firmly believe the Mercedes-Benz E-Class represents a superior offering in terms of cohesive quality and overall execution compared to its direct rivals. Investing in an expensive luxury car like the 2025 E-Class means investing in unparalleled quality and technological advancement.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class may not have been the most flamboyant contender for our Car of the Year award. However, much like the finest luxury products, its intrinsic value is not derived from mere popularity. Instead, the new E-Class exudes a quiet confidence and an inherent capability that needs no external validation. It is neither ostentatious nor overtly flashy; it showcases its worth directly to the driver rather than broadcasting it to the world. More significantly, it excelled in our six evaluation criteria to a greater extent than any other competitor, solidifying its position as the undisputed recipient of the Golden Calipers—its second win in less than five years. This consistent recognition underscores the E-Class’s enduring appeal and its status as a leader in the luxury sedan market.
